Love and Peace

I miss my husband Brad.    I wanted to share with you my new stencil I created with his passing in my mind.  His  birthday is  August 17th.   I wanted to make something that could hang in my studio so he is there with me every day.    About a month and a half after he had passed, I created this stencil for The Crafters Workshop.   It was released this month.

It is to remind me of  our adventures, and that day on Santa Monica pier, where this photo was taken.  It was such a beautiful relaxing day for both of us.

It encompasses Brad so well.  Being at the beach and people watching.

I  started with a 12″ x 12″ burlap frame, and used gel medium (any brand) to apply a sheet of collage paper (found at Jo-Ann stores).  While the paper  as still a little damp I placed masking tape onto the paper and lifted it.  Some of the paper came off, giving it a beautiful torn effect.  I diluted some gold metallic paint and painted over the paper.  When it was dry,  I stenciled the words of the stencil onto the paper using black acrylic.  I outlined the words with a taupe color marker to make them pop.  I kept the stencil in place and stenciled the remaining designs with robin’s egg blue acrylic paint.  I created dots and circles (paint cap) with gold paint.  Lastly I stamped a rubber stamp with a script design onto the broken heart.  When you break it down in steps this canvas was really very easy to create.

Art and Soul Virginia Beach 2015

Sunset at Virginia Beach!

This fall I will be teaching classes at Art and Soul Retreat  in Virginia Beach, September 28-October 4.  I am very happy and excited to be teaching at this venue, as I have never been to Virginia Beach.  Some of these photos are students work.  Aren’t they beautiful?  If anyone has visted area and venue, I would love to hear about your stay.

Classes I will be teaching at Art and Soul Virginia Beach:

Collage Painting for Fabric:   Students will learn techniques to create their own custom designed fabric. Layering the applications of color, texture, design will be covered. Instruction will also be given on how to create foam stamps and using found objects for printing. The one of a kind designed fabric will then be used to create a no-sew wallet.

Ripped, Peeled, and Dripped Paper Relic Collage:  Students will create a canvas wall art collage. Techniques will be step by step, allowing students to build up textures and interesting designs. If you like ripping, peeling back layers, and random application of paint, then this class is for you.

Fiber Art Tapestry:  Students will learn a layering technique that incorporates both fabric and paper. Each student will go home with a small sampler incorporating embroidery and lots of texture.

I love text, mail, and combining paper and fabric.  This class has all of those features and I am so happy to be teaching it.
Create a beautiful art quilt, combining paper and fabric. Students are asked to bring their personal correspondence such as hand written journal pages, letters, mail, cancelled postage & stamps, and ephemera. Those materials along with a little paint and machine stitching will create a very unique art quilt.

Extreme Needlefelted  Journal Cover

Thursday, August 22; 9 am-4pm

This is one of my favorite techniques, and I am so happy to be teaching it at home in the Chicago area.  The title says extreme, but this class is very easy and fun!  We will create felted, textured layers of pattern and color.  Learn how to incorporate nontraditional materials such as paper along with silk, felt, and many other materials.  I hope you will join me, there are still some openings available!

Painted Fiber Art Journal Covers

This class introduces quilt batting as a substrate.  We will paint, alter, embroider, and sew the batting, creating a cool one of a kind journal cover.

The morning will be spent creating the journal base with batting and stitching (both machine and hand). In the afternoon color will be added with a variety of mediums and embellishment.  You do not need to be an expert at embroidery to take this class,  I like to call it mixed media style embroidery.

We will turn this batting into a beautiful, one of a kind, journal cover.
