Sunset at Virginia Beach!

This fall I will be teaching classes at Art and Soul Retreat  in Virginia Beach, September 28-October 4.  I am very happy and excited to be teaching at this venue, as I have never been to Virginia Beach.  Some of these photos are students work.  Aren’t they beautiful?  If anyone has visted area and venue, I would love to hear about your stay.

Classes I will be teaching at Art and Soul Virginia Beach:

Collage Painting for Fabric:   Students will learn techniques to create their own custom designed fabric. Layering the applications of color, texture, design will be covered. Instruction will also be given on how to create foam stamps and using found objects for printing. The one of a kind designed fabric will then be used to create a no-sew wallet.

Ripped, Peeled, and Dripped Paper Relic Collage:  Students will create a canvas wall art collage. Techniques will be step by step, allowing students to build up textures and interesting designs. If you like ripping, peeling back layers, and random application of paint, then this class is for you.

Fiber Art Tapestry:  Students will learn a layering technique that incorporates both fabric and paper. Each student will go home with a small sampler incorporating embroidery and lots of texture.

With Jaime Echt, owner of The Crafter’s Workshop

So many great and exciting things happened at the 2015 CHA mega show.  I released 20 new stencil designs with The Crafter’s Workshop.  For the first time I designed smaller, 4″ stencils that I call Rebekah’s Remnants.

It is always a pleasure working with Jaime Echt  from The Crafters Workshop!  They will be available here, here, and here.   Here are my models with the  stencil designs.  Please take a look and let me know what you would create with them!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Greenville, SC – Fabric Editions, Inc. is pleased to announce the nomination of the new product line called Fabric Elements to the Craft and Hobby Association’s (CHA) Hot Products for 2015 in the Fabric/Craft category. The product winners in each category will be announced at the CHA Foundation Gala on Sunday, January 11 from 6:00pm-10:00pm in the Convention Center Ballroom during the CHA Annual Mega Show taking place in Anaheim, California.

Fabric Elements is a cooperative development of products that feature the design, work and inspiration of mixed-media Artist, Rebekah Meier. Rebekah has a long standing reputation as a featured designer of mixed media projects to magazines such as ‘Cloth, Paper, Scissors’ and other publications from Interweave Press as well as Stampington & Company publications.

“Rebekah Meier’s sterling reputation and experience was a natural fit to join in partnership with us, since we are the leader in pre-cut fabrics.” says Marsha Walling, CEO of Fabric Editions, Inc. “Her style of art was the perfect match to the fabric substrates we were planning to bring to market as pre-cuts. We anticipated the trend in providing a fabric foundation for artwork that we were starting to see at in some of the art quilts, and knew this crossed over perfectly with more experienced scrapbooking and stamping crafters.”

The product line is made up of 32 SKU’s, though retailers can pick and choose the product story that suits their consumer. In the line are 9 fabric substrates, 12 cotton fabric squares (known as fat quarters, as they are a quarter yard of fabric), 6 embellishment SKU’s including three stencils, tissue paper, and lace trims, and 3 self-contained kits. Additionally, the product line will launch with an exclusive technique book by Rebekah Meier showing her latest mixed-media projects and step by step instructions using these fabrics.

“I’m so excited for Fabric Elements to be nominated as a CHA Hot Product! It’s been wonderful to have the opportunity to create these products with Fabric Editions and share my love for Mixed Media,” said Rebekah Meier.

My Love and Best Friend

Bradley Meier 1961-2014

Brad Meier
1961-2014

When I started my blog, I decided to keep it only about my business activities and events related to the art, craft, and quilt industries that I work in.  With this post I have decided to tell those of you that don’t know, something very personal.  My husband of 33 years Brad Meier,  suddenly passed away from an aortic aneurism on October 11, 2014.  Some of you that read this might  recognize Brad’s  photo from CHA and retreats where we attended and where I taught.  He got to meet  so many of my creative friends.  He would accompany me on most of my trips, helping me, both of us seeing the US one retreat or trade show, and city at a time.  He loved to travel.  The above photo was taken on Santa Monica pier in CA last January after CHA.  We always would stay  couple days after the show to enjoy the sun and warm weather of Callie.  We both loved the ocean and the beach.   I was so blessed to have him in my life.  He was not only my love, and my best friend, he was also my biggest supporter of my work.  He was funny (had a very dry sense of humor), smart, caring, helpful,  and kept me grounded when I needed it.   I am writing this post for many reasons.  One being,  I know I am not alone in losing someone that is missed was very loved, and maybe taken suddenly away.  Those of you that would like to post a memory of your loved one, I would consider it an honor.   I hope to continue to create, teach, write, and design, and I know my Brad will be with me all the way.

Thank all of you  that have sent well wishes and kind words of support.  I appreciate it so much.

Creative Update! New Magazine Articles

Custom Designed Collage Fabric

So much has been happening behind the scenes here in my studio.  Traveling, writing, and preparing for TV segments, and a major studio makeover,  are just some of the things I have been working on.  I have been also working this summer on a very special project that makes me so happy I could burst.  Right now I cannot talk about it, but I will be sure to let you know as soon as I can!  I am so happy to have my work featured in four magazines this Fall!  In the October/November issue of Quilting Arts magazine, I demonstrate my technique for creating painted collage on fabric.  It is one of my favorite ways to create my own fabric designs incorporating my stencils.  Please be sure to check out Art from the Heart, The Breast Pocket Project.  Vivika Hansen DeNegre interviews Melanie Testa about raising awareness and her  artistic outlet after  breast cancer.

Mixed media zipper bag

In the Holiday issue of Quilting Arts Handmade gifts and Home Decor, I have a mixed needle-felting project.  The project combines my favorites, paper and fabric!  It is a zipper bag that would make a very unique present.  I have always been afraid of zippers, but I can attest that with very little practice  they are very easy to apply.

In the September/October issue of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine, my technique for mixed-media layering is featured.  I love Halloween and think the cover is so cute!  This project is a favorite of mine because it demonstrates how you can add embroidery stitches and cords to your fiber art pieces.  And of course it also has paper incorporated into the design!

Last winter, I was preparing examples for my stencil debut at CHA.  This stencil model in Apprentice showed my love of circles.  This stencil  in particular was inspired by my coffee cup stains, inevitably left daily  on my work space covering.

My pile of completed ATC’s

My friend, Lisa Fulmer, has a new book called Craft Your Stash which is launching October 1, 2014!  Lisa has designed many projects  inspiring us to put a dent in our stash of of supplies.  There are so many cool projects to pick from.   Two of my favorite projects are  Altered CD Art and Door Plaque, but my all time favorite is creating ATC’s.  Lisa has written a great technique for using up waste paint left over from previous projects.  For myATC’s I could not choose just one of the techniques, so I used them all.  The techniques,  Stencil It, Streak it, Sponge It, and Stamp It were so fun, that I spent hours creating them!    First I dug out my stencils and the other supplies, followed Lisa’s directions and wala!    ATC’s are so simple and make great use of you stash supplies.  I hope you will have as much fun as I have creating!

Check out  www.craftyourstash.com for all kinds of information and giveaway!   Be sure to LIKE the Craft your Stash fb page and be entered to win a crafty stash of cool products, including  Lisa’s book.

Signed copies of Craft Your Stash are available here.  Also available at local craft and book stores.

My Article in Pages Magazine!

aj1406_1

I thought I would share an article I have in the Summer issue of Cloth Paper Scissors, Pages magazine.  For my book More Fabric Art CollageI created a technique which I call

Batting Tapestries.  It combines both quilt batting and lots of hand and machine embroidery. It is a fun way to use up batting scraps!   For Pages I used the technique to create journal covers.  I hope you will check it out!

What do you do with all of your batting scraps?

Quilting Arts TV

7-3-14 clear set QA

Back in March I traveled to Cleveland Ohio to tape three episodes of Quilting Arts TV.  It was a whirlwind and I enjoyed every minute of it.  Everyone from  Quilting Arts TV and Kathie Stull’s studio were so kind and helpful, making us all feel at home.  This season has a new host, Susan Brubaker Knapp.  Susan is such a natural and did a spectacular job!  My episodes for this season are 1406 and 1408.  I also taped one for the 1500 season.  Episode 1406 is titled Designing Women, where I demonstrate my techniques for designing my own fabrics using paint.  Episode 1408 is titled “Felt It!”, where I demonstrate my mixed media needle-felting technique. It was a great experience!  Below are some of my photos from my day of taping.  Don’t you just love the colors on the set!.

The season is airing now, and I hope you will check your local PBS listings for times in your area.
